Saltash 1 Argyle XI 1

ARGYLE managers Carl Fletcher took the chance to have a look at several of his fringe professionals in this game at Kimberley Stadium against a good Carlsberg South West Peninsula League side.

Saltash might be six rungs lower in the pyramid structure but they gave the Pilgrims a hard work-out with the visitor's equaliser not coming until 10 minutes from time.

Saltash should have taken a fifth minute lead but Sam Hughes steered a free header, from Matt Cusack's cross, wide of 'keeper Ollie Chenoweth's goal.

Argyle hit back, with Joe Lennox firing across the face of Ben Elphick's goal before Lewis Russell's timely interception robbed Isaac Vassell as he bore down on the home goal.

Jared Sims deflected, at full stretch, a Lennox cross into the side-netting before Argyle missed their best chance of the game.

Another fine run by Lennox took him past two defenders before setting up Paris Cowan-Hall but he crashed a great chance against the underside of the crossbar from 10 yards.

Argyle had another good chance at the start of the second half but Sims saw his free header well tipped over the home bar by Elphick.

It was Saltash who were to take the lead on 52 minutes when Toby Clark's header struck substitute Nathan Summer's hand for Ross Saint to confidentally beat Ollie Chenoweth from the subsequent penalty.

Chenoweth then pulled out a great save to deny Cusack before Argyle brought on several of their youngsters and for the first time in the game looked to be more dangerous of the two sides.

Cowan-Hall wasted another chance by firing Jordan Copp's cross into the side-netting before he was replaced by Solomon Wheatley.

Ironically, it was the apprentice who set up Joshua Hutchinson, who had only been on the pitch for two minutes, to fire home at the near post to save his side from defeat.
