Greatest Pilgrim Managers
Ranked No.4
Bob Jack
The incredible Argyle legend Bob Jack managed the Pilgrims for a total of 29 years over two spells and also represented our club as a player.
Bob started his career in his hometown of Alloa in Scotland and then signed for Bolton in 1895. A speedy winger, Bob Jack moved to Preston and then Argyle in 1903. He became our player-manager in 1905 and led the club to lofty positions in the Western and Southern Leagues.
He moved to Southend as player-manager in 1906, returning to Home Park in 1910. Over the next 28 years, Bob oversaw the rise of Argyle from a regional club to an established team in the national game.
He won the Southern League title in 1913 and then led us into the Football League for the first time in 1920. Bob guided Argyle to runner-up spot in Division Three South for a record six seasons in a row, finally winning promotion to the Second Division in 1930.
He consolidated our position for the next eight years, finally retiring in 1938. The great Bob Jack passed away in 1943 and his ashes were scattered on the pitch at his beloved Home Park.
